Long Biography
Born in Darlington and based in Newcastle, Dr Jo Clement is a working-class poet and interdisciplinary maker of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller ethnicity. The recipient of an AHRC Northern Bridge PhD scholarship, she is a Northern Writers' Award winner and lectures in Creative Writing at Northumbria University. BBC Radio credits include Enchanted Isle, Northern Drift, Poetry Please, Start the Week and Your Local Arena. Her writing has been published by Routledge, RomaTrial, Nine Arches Press, the Royal Literary Fund, Poems on the Underground; and features in the Financial Times and Poetry Review. 'Listen' and 'Existence' were commissioned for the Memorial to Europe's Sinti and Roma Murdered Under Nazism. From 2022-2024 Jo selected Poetry Book Society collections and wrote reviews for the PBS Bulletin. Since 2018, she has led Butcher’s Dog as its Managing Editor. The press was voted as producing the UK's 'Best Poetry Magazine' (Saboteur Awards, 2022 and 2023).
